How Companies Are Selected

The weekly spotlight is an editorial selection. These are the rules we apply, what our assessment covers, and what it does not.

Sourcing and review

Companies are nominated through the StartupFuel community, including founders, investors, and program partners, or apply through a StartupFuel assessment. Every featured company passes an editorial review before publication, and the founder approves every public metric and description.

Selection criteria

  • Evidence of traction appropriate to the company's stage, with each metric tied to a time period.
  • A completed StartupFuel assessment within the last 90 days.
  • A founder-approved anonymized summary that does not reveal the company's identity.
  • No unresolved red flags identified during review.

Readiness score methodology

The readiness score (0–100) summarizes an AI-assisted assessment followed by StartupFuel analyst review. It covers team, market, product, traction evidence, financial readiness, and data room completeness. It measures preparedness for investor diligence. It is not a valuation, a credit rating, or a prediction of returns. Companies without a completed scored assessment show no score.

Thesis fit

Matches compare each company's sector, stage, and geography with the criteria in an investor's profile. Investor feedback re-orders future matches within those criteria. Thesis fit describes alignment with stated criteria only and is not an investment recommendation.

Identity protection

Company names, websites, and founder details are never public. An investor sees a company's identity only after StartupFuel approves the investor, the company fits the investor's stated thesis, and the founder grants permission. Some founders pre-authorize approved investors whose thesis fits.

Sponsored placement

Sponsored placements are always labeled on the company card. Assessment fees are separate from sponsorship, and buying an assessment does not guarantee selection, investor interest, or funding.

Important disclosures

The spotlight is informational and does not offer or solicit securities. Historical venture outcomes do not predict the performance of any featured company. Investors should do their own diligence.
